With so many choices, choosing wall art and décor can sometimes feel difficult and overwhelming. But this is one aspect of your décor where you should lead with your heart before subsequently leaning into solid design principles to make the most of your emotional journey.
As you consider how to select or where to place a piece of art, you can start by assessing the color scheme of your space. You’ll often find that your artwork selection tends to harmonize with existing hues in your home – most of us have inherent color preferences that resonate across our walls and even into our closets. That resonance makes it easy to assign art placement in the same way we would any other furnishing or item of décor. But sometimes – and especially if your space is defined by neutral tones – adding a colorful art piece can provide a high energy focal point with its contrast.
Art has an interesting relationship with your room's overall style. If your furniture and décor leans to modern, that style preference may see you opting for a vibrant contemporary abstract or black-and-white photographic print. If your style is more traditional, you may have a tendency to choose art with classic themes and styles, like botanicals and florals. This is, however, one area of interior design where rules are made to be broken – where the collection, curation, and arrangement of items is perhaps more important than the individual piece, and each of the individual pieces may not all “belong” to the overarching design plan in your home.
Of at least equal consideration, placement of your wall décor IS as important as the art piece itself. While we all understand the basic rule of thumb that denotes large artwork as the ideal choice for a focal-point wall (above a sofa, bed or fireplace) and small to medium-sized wall décor used in less spacious areas, that really is just a starting point for your wall as it becomes a canvas for your expression.
