Introducing Copenhagen

Our Copenhagen Collection

It was the beginning of the space age. It was a time of optimism and looking forward to the future, a time of modern envisioning, a time of advancement and change.

Joining the economic growth and technological breakthroughs of the mid-20th century was a fresh design attitude of simple lines, organic shapes, and refined materials. The attitude reflected a desire for a new style, one that combined carry-over modern aesthetics of Art Deco with minimal ornamentation and a focus on functionality.

This new style was popularized by architects and designers that included now-familiar names like Eero Saarinen, Charles Eames, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Their visionary efforts last century created a modern design philosophy that resonates to this day. In it, the use of natural materials such as wood, leather, and metal were used to create furnishings that prioritized efficiency and simplicity.

Eero Saarinen’s TULIP table is one enduring example of that concept. In that table, you can see clearly that mid-century designers didn’t renounce flair, or even adornment. Instead, Danish Modern designers pursued an intrinsic, integrated approach. The likely reason this design style continues to be widely appreciated and adopted is its deftly managed marriage of form and function.

Bassett’s history with modern furnishings has enjoyed the same evolution as the aesthetic itself, bringing the style to a larger audience in the 1950s and ‘60s. Then, around the turn of this century, we enjoyed a partnership with another notable post-modern designer, Vladimir Kagan, to create a fresh interpretation of 20th century design for the 21st century.

Now, the Danish Modern aesthetic is enjoying its newest revival in our Copenhagen Collection. Inspired by the artistic premise of the original designers, our collection is focused on simple lines with understated features that allow the eye to appreciate the finely-wrought details. Built, as it is, of American hardwoods by Bassett artisans, this collection is the newest translation of Bassett heritage and classic design in a freshly modern mode for your lifestyle today.

Simply beautiful.
