This guide has answers to many frequently asked questions about queen-size bed dimensions so you can choose a bed size that fits your space well and gives you the most comfortable night's sleep. 

What are the dimensions of a queen-size bed?

A standard queen size bed measures 60 inches wide by 80 inches long. Compared to other bed sizes, queen-size bed dimensions are less than a king-size bed and more than a full-size bed; a king-size bed measures 76 inches wide by 80 inches long, and a full-size bed measures 54 inches wide by 75 inches long.

Often referenced as having the same measurements as a standard 60" X 80" queen size bed, queen bed frame size varies depending on its design, material, and thickness. Queen bed frame width is often an important factor when determining if a queen bed is a good fit. 

Like queen-size bed frames, queen mattress size is within the range of standard queen bed measurements but can measure 2 to 3 inches larger or smaller, depending on the mattress material (such as memory foam, feather, ticking fabric, etc.).

Queen headboards range from 60 inches wide to 63 inches wide on average and have an average height of 48 inches. The size of the queen headboard one chooses often depends more on your stylistic preferences than room or sleep space considerations. There are so many variations of queen headboards, that it's totally up to you as to what size you choose. 

Non-standard queen size bed dimensions

Below are the sizes for common non-standard queen bed sizes, including California queen, Olympic (or expanded) queen, and split-queen beds. Depending on if you are single or have a partner, have kids who sometimes sleep with you, your room size, and your personal sleeping preferences, these alternative mattress sizes can be a perfect fit. Please note that it may be more difficult to find mattresses and accessories that fit or work perfectly for these sizes.

A California queen size bed measures 60 inches wide by 84 inches long and is 4 inches longer than a standard queen. A California queen bed can be a good fit for people who are a little taller or drift down the bed while sleeping at night. 

The largest queen size, an Olympic queen (sometimes called "Expanded Queen") mattress measures 66 inches wide by 80 inches long and is 6 inches wider than a standard queen. With this size, two people can have a little more sleeping room and can be an excellent choice if you have large furniture or your room isn't quite big enough for a king bed. This may also be a good choice if you have kids who lay next to you often.

A queen-size bed measures 60 inches wide. With dimensions that are 7 inches wider than a full-size bed (or double bed), the width of a queen bed will provide extra room for single individuals and couples to sleep comfortably at night.

A queen-size bed measures 80 inches long, which is 5 inches longer than a full-size bed and the same length as a king-size bed. Whether you have a partner or are a single sleeper, this can be a great fit for those who enjoy sleeping with a little extra legroom or have pets who may like to sleep at the end of the bed at night (especially if you are a taller person).

Queen beds fit best in bedrooms that have at least 9.6 X 10 square feet of space and are a great option for rooms with as much as 10 X 14 square feet of space. Much of this depends on how much floor space you prefer to have to walk around and whether the size of your bedroom furniture will accommodate a queen bed. 

Queen size mattresses can measure anywhere from 8 inches deep to 18 inches deep. While mattress thickness is a matter of preference for most people, adults usually sleep on a mattress with at least 10 inches of thickness.

Queen beds may be the best mattress sizes if you have a moderately sized bedroom or a small primary bedroom that can accommodate it and want more room than a full bed (or double bed). 

If your queen bed is too wide for your room or your furniture is too large, you may not be able to fit it between your nightstands. To a certain degree, besides obvious examples where a bed clearly doesn't fit, some bed sizes may simply "feel" better than others, depending on the person. 

Comforters for queen size beds typically measure 86-88 inches wide by 96-100 inches long. Comforters within this range should fit most standard queen-size beds easily. 

For a bedroom arrangement with a storage ottoman, make sure you can fit the ottoman at the foot of your bed before choosing a queen bed. If not, it may be best to option for a full-size bed instead or put the ottoman somewhere else and get a queen size bed with storage. 

Queen bed frames can range from 60.5 to nearly 70 inches wide, depending on the materials used. 

The length of a queen size bed frame ranges from 70-90 inches long, depending on the material of the bed frame and whether or not there is a headboard. While wooden queen bed frames with a headboard can measure 90 feet long in total, metal queen bed frames without a headboard can be as short as 70-71 inches.

A queen-size bed measures 5 feet wide by 6.7 feet long (5 ft. X 6.7 ft) with a mattress surface area of approximately 33 square feet. 

Frame, headboard, and mattress sizes aren't the only measurements that are important when considering a queen-size bed. Below are some useful dimensions for queen bed accessories and bedding, including queen headboard, rug, box spring, and sheet sizes.

A queen size pillow measures 20" X 30". When placed side by side, the dimensions of a queen-size pillow are designed to fit perfectly together. Also, to prevent confusion, the term "queen pillow" is often used interchangeably with the word "standard pillow". Pillows designed to fit other beds may be suitable, but may not appear completely symmetrical compared to queen pillows. Also, there are alternative size pillows for queen beds that may be longer or deeper than a standard pillow. 

Flat queen sheets measure 90 inches wide by 102 inches long. Since fitted sheets usually have the same measurements as the bed frame, fitted queen sheets most often measure close to or exactly 60" X 80". It may be more difficult to find sheets for some of the alternate sizes of queen beds. 

Queen box springs measure 60" X 80" for standard queen beds, 60" X 84" for California queen beds, 66" X 80" for Olympic queen beds and approx. 30" X 80" for split queen beds. In terms of depth or thickness, queen box springs range from 8 inches deep to 12 inches deep.
